“Don’t you have about a thousand things to do before Tuesday?” Whitney asked Drew as they left Ruby’s Bistro after a delicious meal.

Drew wished he had a reason to take Whitney’s hand again—even if only for a moment. Leaving her parents’ RV with her hand in his had been the highlight of his day.

Up until supper.

Getting to sit across from her, talking to her about everything from childhood memories to current concerns, had been the second highlight.

The third was just around the corner.

“I have the world’s best staff,” he explained. “And I’ve worked so hard the past three days that I needed this break as much as you did.”

They walked down Main Street, past the shops, the art gallery and the ice cream parlor. The green street lamps were just turning on and there was a hint of light in the western sky. It was Friday night, which meant there was a little extra traffic downtown as people visited the small theater, ate at one of the restaurants or visited the art show at the gallery.

“Is it weird that I miss Elliot and we’ve only been apart for about three hours?” Whitney asked, turning her dark brown eyes to Drew. She was wearing a simple black dress with a red scarf and a jean jacket. They’d both dressed up a little before leaving home.

His hand accidentally brushed against hers, sending a tingling sensation to the center of his chest. It was one thing to grab her hand to lead her out of a tight spot, but another to openly take her hand on the street for no other purpose than to touch her.

The longing to do that was so powerful it rocked him for a second.

She was watching him for his answer, so he shook his head and smiled. “No. It’s not weird at all. It’s called love.”

“Love is a strange thing, isn’t it? The different forms it takes. Until I met Elliot, I never felt this way for anyone in my life. All I want to do is look at him, cuddle him and just be near him.” She shook her head in wonder. “And he hasn’t done a thing to make me love him, except exist. Being away from him feels like a part of me is missing.”

Drew nodded, still trying to understand his own reaction to Whitney. It was almost as if she was explaining his thoughts and feelings toward her. All day, while at work, he couldn’t stop thinking about getting home to Whitney. He wanted to be near her, to talk to her, to look at her, to listen to her. And now he had this overwhelming desire to touch her, hold her hand, draw her into his arms.

Was he feeling love? Toward his wife?

The very notion made him pause.

He couldn’t fall in love with his wife. It wasn’t part of the plan. Just a few weeks ago, he’d hardly known her, and yet, she was almost all he thought about now. But it was more than her just existing.
